Pokhara (822m/ 2,6696ft) to Kande (1,770m/ 5,807ft) drive and trek to Forest Camp (2,600m/ 8,530ft): 1.5 hours (drive) and 4 to 5 hours (trek)
Your Mardi Himal Trekking adventure begins in the serene lakeside city of Pokhara, known for its peaceful atmosphere and stunning views of the Annapurna range. After an early morning breakfast, you will begin your drive toward Kande Village. The driving route winds across the bustling outskirts of Pokhara and then into the quieter countryside. In this driving section, you will rise gently through green hillside dotted with scattered homes and terraced fields.
During this scenic drive, you will get a glimpse into rural Nepali life before setting foot on the path. The drive to Kande from Pokhara takes about 1.5 hours. After your arrival, you will take a short break to sort out your luggage and prepare your gear for the trek. From Kande, the trail climbs steadily uphill along the stone-paved step. After a short while, following the path in a cool and shaded stretch, you emerge at Australian Camp.
This camp is a grassy hamlet on top of a ridge that offers stunning views of Machhapuchhre, Annapurna South and Hiunchuli. The stretching further ahead gently descends before climbing again to Pothana Village. This is a small village with stone houses, courtyard gardens and a few teahouses. Leaving Pothana, you will follow the trail across dense rhododendron, oak and maple forest. This stretch is tranquil as there are no permanent villages in this route; you may encounter only a couple of small teashops built to serve trekkers.
In the final stretch, the climb to Forest Camp is gradual but steady. You will need to overcome occasional steep sections along the way. The path is also narrower than the village sections, but well-defined. This is a less-trekked route, so it feels more remote and immersive. By mid-afternoon, you will arrive at Forest Camp, locally referred to as Kokar. This settlement is tucked deep inside the first, with only a handful of lodges providing food and accommodation to trekkers.
Max. Elevation:2600m
Duration:1.5 hours(drive) and 4 to 5 hours(trek)
Distance:27km(drive) and 13.7km(trek)
Day02
Forest Camp to High Camp (3,550m/ 11,646ft): 6 to 7 hours
This day’s trek takes you from the dense and mossy woodlands of Forest Camp into the wide, high alpine terrain that unveils a stunning Himalayan panorama. Leaving Forest Camp after a warm breakfast, you will follow a gentle yet steady climb across thick rhododendron, oak and maple trees. As you climb higher, the forest starts to thin out and offer you intermittent views of Mardi Himal.
You will then reach Low Camp, a small settlement with few lodges. Here, many trekkers pause for tea or lunch amidst the charming scenery. Moving further, the dense forest makes way for open ridges that are covered in alpine grasslands. The climbing segment from Low Camp to Badal Danda is considered especially rewarding. Badal Danda can be translated to ‘Cloud Hill,’ which is perfect for this ridge.
The clouds often drift beneath this ridge and the surreal panorama of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli and Machhapuchhre on top of that feels like you drifted into a different dimension. After enjoying the views from Badal Danda, you will continue walking on a narrow ridge toward High Camp. As you close in to the high camp, the air gets noticeably thinner and crisper. But the sheer grandeur of the views inspires you to keep moving forward.
After arriving at the high camp, you will settle in at a cozy teahouse here. The night sky at this altitude feels breathtaking, often glittering with stars. And, the silhouettes of peaks stand out starkly against the dim moonlight.
Max. Elevation:3550m

Day03
Trekking from High Camp to Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m/ 14,763ft): 7 hours
Today’s adventure is the most thrilling and rewarding part of your entire 5 Day Mardi Himal Trek itinerary. You will start your trek early in the morning to take advantage of clear skies and the best possible panoramas of the Himalayan peaks. In the early morning, the air is crisp and the surroundings feel quiet. From High Camp, the trail climbs immediately along the narrow ridge.
The views are stunning on both sides, Modi Khola Valley on the left and the frosted slopes leading toward Siding on the right. You will keep following the path with occasional rocky patches that are mostly grassy. Although the route is not technical, the altitude makes the ascent more demanding. In about 2 hours of walking, you will reach the Upper View Point (4,200m/ 13,779ft).
It is a perfect spot to pause and soak in the scenery. From the Upper View Point, the mountains feel almost within arm’s reach and their snowy faces brim in the morning light. From this point onward, the trail becomes steeper and more rugged as you head toward the Mardi Himal Base Camp. From the base camp, you can enjoy the breathtaking 360-degree sweep of Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna and Machhapuchhre.
The serene silence beneath these towering peaks is broken only by the wind. From the foothills, the scale of the mountains feels almost surreal and like standing at the edge of the world. After spending time at the Mardi Himal base Camp, enjoying the tranquil atmosphere and photographing, you will retrace your steps back to High Camp. Here, a warm meal and well-deserved rest await your arrival.

As you keep descending to the lower elevation, the air grows warmer, richer in oxygen and the vegetation quickly becomes denser. From the Forest Camp, you will branch off toward Siding Village (1,750m/ 5,741ft). This is a peaceful Gurung Village that few trekkers see, as it is not part of the main route. From the charming villages, the route continues to drop across other beautiful hillside settlements like Kalimati and Ghalel.
Eventually, the trail brings you back to Dhampus, one of the most scenic villages in the Annapurna region. This village is perched on a ridge and offers panoramic views of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges, which are especially striking during sunset as the peaks glow golden. Dhampus Village is also a cultural treat that features traditional Gurung houses and a welcoming atmosphere.
After a long day’s walk, you will settle into a comfortable teahouse and enjoy the hearty traditional meals. It is time to reflect on the incredible shift from high alpine wilderness to the gentle and green foothills of Nepal.

I came to Nepal in March 2025 and visited Pokhara. From there, I went to Sarangkot, where I had a stunning view of Mount Annapurna, Amadablam, Dhaulagiri, and many other peaks in the Annapurna region. I wanted to explore these peaks further, so I asked the local people where the best and easiest place to visit by trekking . They suggested the Mardi Himal Base Camp trek. I contacted Mr. Dhruba, and he took care of all the arrangements for me. Everything was handled by him – from guiding me to organizing the accommodations and providing all the necessary support. The guide was excellent, and the accommodation facilities were great. After returning from Mardi Himal Base Camp, I also visited Dhampus, which was another beautiful spot. I want to thank the whole team for their support in making my Mardi Himal trek a successful journey. Thanks a lot!
I’ve done many short solo hikes in different parts of Nepal, like Shivapuri and Chisapani, but I’ve always faced some challenges, such as finding water, snacks, and dealing with trail conditions. This time, I decided to do the Mardi Himal trek and contacted Mr. Dhruba from Eco Holidays Nepal. I joined the trek with this company, and it turned out to be my best experience yet. I had a guide who helped me with everything, so I didn’t have to worry about food, water, or other essentials. The guide took care of all the arrangements, and I felt fully supported throughout the trek. I am extremely satisfied with the help I received from Eco Holidays Nepal. The service, food, and experience at the base camp were excellent, and I couldn’t have asked for more.
I strongly recommend EcoHolidays Nepal for trekking. I recently completed the Mardi Himal trek with my personal guide, and the experience was fantastic and very familiar. I am planning to go on the Everest Base Camp trek next time with the same guide. The coordination and the nature of the company were excellent.

Essential Information
Mardi Himal Trek Difficulty Level
The trek Mardi Himal Nepal is considered a moderate-level trek in the Himalayas. This journey doesn’t lead you to extreme altitudes and demanding terrains like the Annapurna Circuit Trek or the Everest Base Camp Trek. Thus, this journey is suitable for both seasonal hikers and first-time trekkers with reasonable fitness. The Mardi Himal Trek total distance is around 40 to 50 km (25 to 31 miles), depending on the start point and overall route plan. This trek can be completed within the span of 5 to 7 days, and the daily walking hours are around 4 to 7 hours.
As for the trail conditions, you will start on well-marked trails through rhododendron and oak forests. Then, moving along with the steeper alpine path, you will approach High Camp and Mardi Himal Base Camp. However, there are no technical sections along the way. One of the key challenges of Himalayan trekking is the risk of altitude sickness (AMS). You start your trek at Kande (1,770m/ 5,807ft) and reach the highest trek point at Mardi Himal Base Camp (4,500m/ 14,763ft).

However, our itinerary plan follows paced walking and a gradual ascent to allow trekkers enough time to acclimatize. So, in overall, the Mardi Himal Trek difficulty level is at a moderate level. Although the trekking route doesn’t demand prior experience or exceptional fitness, a good level of preparation will ensure a comfortable and memorable adventure.
Mardi Himal Trek Season (Best Time)
The Mardi Himal Trekking is a year-round journey; however, the season of your choice will shape your overall journey. The landscapes you see, the comfort level along the trekking trail and even the culture you encounter will differ depending on the season of your preference. If you are looking for the most ideal timeframe, then the autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) take the crown as the ultimately best Mardi Himal Trek season. Here is a detailed breakdown of what each season presents:
Autumn (September to November)
The autumn season is considered the golden period for high-altitude trekking in Nepal. Before the arrival of this fall season, monsoon rain clears the dust and haze from the atmosphere, revealing crystal-clear panoramas of the Himalayan peaks. The climate is dry and stable, the moderate temperatures also make the long hours of walking more comfortable.
The terraced fields glow golden during this harvest season and the forests remain lush from the monsoon’s moisture. The early autumn season also offers some wildflowers and the later months bring crystal-clear skies. The Mardi Himal Trek Short route also remains firm and dry with minimal risk of mud or ice.
Mardi Himal Trek Temperature in Autumn: 8°C to 20°C (daytime) and 5°C to -5°C (nighttime)
Spring (March to May)
This is the second prime season for trekking in Nepal. Spring season offers stable weather conditions and pleasant trekking temperatures. The start attraction of this season is the rhododendron bloom that takes over the lower trekking regions. During spring’s core period, the hillside blazes with rhododendron colors and forests come alive with bird songs.
Visibility is crystal-clear during the mornings, although it can be slightly hazy in the afternoon. The trekking trails are in good condition, mostly dry, but, short occasional showers are possible during late May as the monsoon season is at the doorstep.
Mardi Himal Trek Temperature in Spring: 10°C to 22°C (daytime) and 8°C to 0°C (nightime)
Mardi Himal Trek in Winter and Monsoon (Off-Season Treks)
Winter (December to February)
Unlike the popular seasons, winter is an off-trekking period in Nepal. Trekking in Nepal in winter is only recommended for experienced trekkers who don’t mind the cold. Likewise, Mardi Himal Trek in winter is perfect for solitude seekers and photographers who want to experience the thriving period of the mountains.
In the winter season, the days are short, but the visibility is unmatched. Snow often covers the higher sections of the trail, especially near High Camp and base camp. Thus, icy or snow patches are common at the higher part of the trail; microspikes/crampons are highly recommended.
Mardi Himal Trek Temperature in Winter: 2°C to 14°C (daytime) and 0°C to -10°C (nighttime)
Monsoon (June to August)
Monsoon is another low season for trekking adventures in the Himalayas. The skies are swamped with rain clouds, the downpours can be consistent, there are risks of flood and landslides, and there are leeches, the annoying hitchhikers (learn how to get rid of leeches while trekking). But, beyond these challenges, the monsoon season features rich greenery, dramatic landscape and less crowded routes.
As the trial conditions are wet, slippery and muddy in the lower regions, being cautious about footing and carrying rainproof gear is essential. If you are up for the seasonal challenges, you can expect near-empty trails and teahouses.
Mardi Himal Trek Temperature in Monsoon: 10°C to 24°C (daytime) and 15°C to 5°C (nighttime)

Although the facilities are more basic compared to the popular trekking routes like Annapurna Circuit Trek or Everest Base Camp Trek, they are sufficient for comfort.

Mattresses, pillows and blankets are provided by the teahouse (but we recommend you to bring a sleeping bag for warmth at the higher regions above Forest Camp). Drinking Water
Staying hydrated is very crucial during high-altitude treks. While walking with 4 to 7 hours timeframe during trekking to Mardi Himal, you will lose a significant water level from your body. And, dehydration is one of the major trigger factors of Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS). So, you need to maintain the water level to reduce the risk of altitude sickness and comfortably traverse across the Himalayan landscape. During this trek, you will find three major options for hydration:
Bottled Mineral Water
Boiled Water at Teahouses
Water from Clean Stations (Tap/Streams)
A plastic bottle is fragile to the Himalayan ecosystem, so it is best to avoid them. The price of the bottled water also increases with the rise in altitude. Along the way, there are also clean water stations like taps and streams where you can fill your bottles. But you shouldn’t drink the water without treating it. Use purification tablets or a water filtration system to make the water safe for consumption.
The safest and cost-efficient way to meet the hydration limit each day (be mindful that it's around 3 to 4 liters per day) is to buy boiled water at the teahouses. They are fairly priced and you can easily refill your bottle while moving along the trail.
Training and Preparation
The Mardi Himal Trek difficulty level is at a moderate level. Compared to other circuits and high-altitude routes, it has fewer difficulty aspects. But, it doesn’t mean you can skip preparation just because it is a relatively easier trekking route. Remember, you will push for the maximum altitude of 4,500 meters (14,763 feet) at the base camp. Likewise, the Mardi Himal Trek total distance is around 40 to 50 km (25 to 31 miles) with 4 to 7 hours walking frame. So, even if the difficulties are not elevated, you need to make proper preparation to overcome challenges along the trek route.
Ideally, for the moderate-level Himalayan treks, a 4 to 8 week training period is quite sufficient. If you are physically active and are following regular workout plans, you may not need to prolong your training. The main focus of your training should be on cardiovascular exercises to build your stamina. Also, strength training like squats, lunges, step-ups, and core exercises will support your legs and back during the trek. Add flexibility and balance exercises to improve joint mobility and reduce the risk of injuries.
**Note: Practise hike is one of the most effective and efficient ways to prepare for high altitude trekking. Hiking to nearby elevated hills helps you familiarize yourself with the mountain terrain and improve your body’s acclimatizing capabilities. Just make sure to carry a backpack with weight during the practice hike, and you are all set for your Himalayan adventure**
Mardi Himal Trek Permits
For trekking Mardi Himal, you will need to secure the necessary trekking permits. The permits issued for the protected regions across the Himalayas are not just bureaucratic formalities. But, they are also part of Nepal’s system to manage tourism responsibly, protect the fragile mountain ecosystem and ensure the safety of the trekkers. With the necessary permits, you won’t be allowed to pass through the checkpoints along the route.
Permit for Mardi Himal Trek
Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)
You can obtain this crucial permit for the trek at Kathmandu or Pokhara (at Nepal Tourism Board Offices). To apply for the permit, you will need a valid passport, photographs (passport-sized) and itinerary details. If you are booking through a registered agency like Eco Holidays Nepal, they will take care of the permits and collect them for you.
Is This Trek Suitable for Beginners?
Yes, the Mardi Himal trek is often recommended as a great choice for first-time trekking in Nepal. Well, it is for a good reason; this journey combined the iconic Himalayan views with a relatively short trek duration and gradual altitude gain. Due to this, this journey is far less intimidating than the longer and demanding journeys like Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Circuit Trek.
While the Mardi Himal Trek difficulty level is at a moderate level, it is wise not to underestimate it. This short yet scenic trek is still a Himalayan journey with higher elevations and long hiking hours each day. Although these challenging aspects of the trek demand respect, they remain well within the range so that most reasonably fit beginners can handle the journey with proper pacing.
