Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400m/ 4,593ft) and hotel transfer

As soon as you land at Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA), a subtle but powerful symphony of visuals awaits your arrival. At the airport, you will be greeted by our local representative holding a placard with your name. After that, you will be transferred to your hotel, passing through a vibrant city where ancient architecture and modern clutter merge.

Once checked in, take your time resting and do a quick gear check. If energy permits, consider a short photo walk to nearby highlights or just exploring the colorful streets of Thamel. In the evening, you will regroup for a welcome dinner, hosted in a traditional Nepali restaurant. In this cozy gathering, your guide will walk you through the route plans, expected conditions and unique photographic opportunities in your Upper Mustang Photography Tour.

Creative Tip: Keep your camera handy, even from the car window; this beautiful capital offers vivid frames, rusted rooftops and prayer flags fluttering above the roadside temples. If you arrive early, request rooftop access at your hotel for the panoramic views of Kathmandu with prayer flags in the foreground and a mountain peeking in the background. Ideal for golden hour test shots.

  • Day02

Kathmandu full sightseeing day around world heritage sites

This day’s adventure is not just about ticking the landmarks off a tourist map. You will take your time to immerse yourself in the soul of the centuries-old city through the camera lens. The UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Kathmandu city are not just rich in a historical sense. They are also compositionally layered and emotionally charged.

A typical world heritage photography circuit includes:

       Swayambhunath

       Boudhanath Stupa

       Pashupatinath Temple

Kathmandu Durbar Square (optional: Patan Durbar Square instead)

Perched on the top of a forested hill, Swayambhunath offers a panoramic canvas of Kathmandu Valley. The wide-angle panoramas of Kathmandu at sunrise with soft haze on the skyline feel surreal. At Boudhanath, you will see the sacred mandala come to life. In the afternoon, you will explore one of the holiest temples in the world, Pasupatinath, which is raw, emotional and spiritually intense.

Your golden hours excursion will be at Patan Durbar Square or Kathmandu Durbar Square. These ancient royal kingdoms offer stunning Newari architecture: intricately carved windows, tiered temples and courtyards. You will be back at your by evening, take your time to review the photo session and prepare for the iconic journey to the Himalayas starting tomorrow.

Creative Tip: Use foreground elements like bells, spinning prayer wheels, or flickering lamps to add depth to your shot at religious sites. Focus on textures, woodwork, or stone steps and frame the silhouettes of pigeons against the layered rooftops. You can also capture the artisans at work in the nearby alleys, metalworkers, woodcarvers and Thanka painters.

    1. Max. Elevation:1400m
    2. Duration:3-4 hrs
  • Day03

Kathmandu to Pokhara (822/ 2,696ft) drive: 6 to 8 hours

The Upper Mustang Photography Tour itinerary of Day 03 marks your descent from the vibrant capital of Kathmandu into the gentler rhythms of rural Nepal. Although this day is often overlooked as a mere transfer day, this driving journey can be surprisingly rich in photographic texture. The driving route on Prithvi Highway out of the capital valleys hugs cliffside ridges and glides along the cascading rivers.

Be on the lookout for the visual vignettes along the way, such as the Trishuli River Valley, where whitewater rafters splash through rapids and golden paddy filed glow under the morning sun. Villages along the way, like Malekhu and Mugling, are also iconic destinations for street photography. Usually around midday, you will stop for lunch at a local eatery, often a roadside hotel that overlooks the river. This will be a perfect chance to recharge your energy and your devices.

Driving further from the lunch stop, the landscape starts to flatten and it is a pretty much straightforward drive near Pokhara. As you get closer to the city, the first hints of the Annapurna range start to appear, often hazy but undoubtedly majestic. As soon as you arrive at this beautiful city of lakes’ you will feel it tranquil and reflective mood perfect for unwinding before tomorrow’s embark to the mountains.

Creative Tip: Keep your camera accessible with a zoom lens to capture fleeting scenes of farmers in terraced fields, old men sipping tea in the roadside stalls and herds of animals on the hills. At the riverside lunch destination as well, you can capture the stunning vistas of cascading rapids striking against the green hills. The motion blur from inside the vehicle, slow-moving river life, or the contrast between modern highways and timeless village scenes are other aspects that you can explore.

    1. Max. Elevation:822m
    2. Duration:6-8hrs
  • Day04

Drive from Pokhara to Jomsom (2,710m/ 8,891ft): 6 to 7 hours

Finally, you are moving toward the heart of the north-central Himalayas. This day’s adventure in your Upper Mustang Photography Tour is not just a transition, but it is a complete transformation. Today, you will traverse across an incredible shift in ecosystem and environment, which will be a photographically electric experience.

Leaving the tranquil city of lakes behind, you will head northwest. For a couple of hours, the driving trail winds through lush valleys and terraced filed flanked by the rolling hills. Away from the buzz of cities, local life hums here gently. From Beni, the road turns rugged and moves along the unpaved and narrow roads.

You will ride beside the Kali Gandaki River Gorge, the deepest gorge in the world that is carved between the 8,000-meter giant Dhaulagiri and Annapurna. You will see a waterfall cascading down the cliff faces and the suspension bridges dangling between sheer ridgelines. This is where you will start to feel the Himalayas breathe.

As you push to the higher elevation, the vegetation starts to thin and the color palette of the landscape starts to shift. Then, you arrive at Marpha Village, which welcomes you with whitewashed homes, apple orchards and narrow alleys paved in flagstones. This high-altitude village is famous for its apples, and also the soft golden light that warps around the stone architecture beautifully during the late afternoon.

The final stretch on this day’s drive is exposed and windswept. As you enter the rain-shadow zone, the terrain is ochre and grey. Winds pick up and the sky is wider, at this altitude, the world feels like it has been stripped down to its geological essence. Rest well tonight; tomorrow you will dive deeper toward Kagbeni, the last outpost before entering the restricted area.

Creative Tip: Look for the contrast between green valleys in the foreground and the white peaks peeking         through clouds in the background. You can also deep focus landscape frame of a river, roads, or mountains       to capture a powerful composition. Marpha is a perfect destination to capture the candid shots of locals             processing apples or drying herbs, this is one of the most photogenic villages in the Lower Mustang region.

    1. Max. Elevation:2710m
    2. Duration:6 to 7 hours
  • Day05

    Drive to Charang (Tsarang) (3,570m/ 11,712ft) via Kagbeni (2,804m/ 9,199ft): 3 to 4 hours

Leaving Jomsom behind, you will switch to the terrain that almost feels surreal in quality. The wind-carved cliffs, ochre nd crimson gorges and the medieval stone villages that feel like frozen in time along the deep ravines, every kilometer here feels visually captivating. Before entering the upper reaches of the restricted area, you will make a brief stop at Kagbeni Village to register permits.

This village, resting at the confluence of Kali Gandaki and Jhing River, is a photographer's dream. Here, you can capture how the Tibetan-Buddhist culture fuses with the Himalayan geography. The red and white Kag Chode Thupten Sampgel Ling Monastery, glowing under the morning light, narrow carved wooden doorframes, prayer wheels embedded onto stone walls and locals wearing traditional Tibetan aprons and turquoise jewelry. All combined, it feels like a cultural paradise for photographers.

After crossing the Kagbeni checkpoint, the road rises and falls across high-desert plateaus, narrow canyons and windswept passes. Then, you arrive at Tange, where whitewashed houses contrast sharply with surrounding crimson cliffs. You will then drive toward Chhusang and Chele, Kali Gandaki River gradually disappears beneath the roded cliffs and caves. Next, you will head to Samar and Ghiling Village following the windswept ridges dotted with mani walls.

Ghiling Village in particular is rich in textures; it has mud houses, half-buried chortens and empty fields that echo with the howling of the high wind. Finally, you arrive at Charang Village, which sits at the edge of a vast canyon. This is the former capital of the ancient Kingdom of Lo. Charang is sparsely populated, quiet and utterly photogenic.

There is a massive red gompa, referred to as Charang Monastery or Ghar Gompa, in the village, which glows during the golden hour. The stone alleys that seem to be carved out of memory and crumbling dzong with panoramic views of Upper Mustang are some of the highlighted parts of Charang.

Creative Tip: Frame local through mud-brick windows or shoot between the fluttering prayer flags in the wind. In the villages with architectural symmetry, capture the doors, mani walls and rooftops in soft sidelight. Likewise, at the higher exposed regions, you can use a wide composition to contrast the scale of the human structures against the vast wilderness and emptiness of the plateau.

    1. Max. Elevation:3570m
    2. Duration:3 to 4 hours
  • Day06

Charang to Lo Manthang (3,840m/ 12,598ft) drive: 2 to 3 hours

After relishing a peaceful morning in Charang, you begin your slow ascent toward Lo Manthang, the walled capital of the ancient Kingdom of Lo. You move along the gently rising trail through the high desert plateaus and pass through the dry river valleys and eroded sandstone cliffs. Before you descend to Lo Manthang, first you will pass through the Lo La Pass, which is a photogenic ridge that reveals the first panoramic views of the walled city.

From here, the wide-angle landscape of the ancient city walls contrasts beautifully against the vast barren and land and the distant snow-clad peaks. This pass also gives you an opportunity to capture Lo Manthang framed by prayer flags, a classic Mustang composition.

Once you enter Lo Manthang, it feels like this ancient Himalayan kingdom exists in a time capsule. The whitewashed mud houses with flat roofs are stacked against each other and woven together by narrow alleyways. At the center of it all is the royal palace, ancient monasteries and chortens that are weathered by centuries of wind. After your arrival, you can take your time to explore the cultural core of this ancient kingdom. This is the stage in your Upper Mustang Photography Tour where the photography shifts from landscape to sacred intimacy.

Lo Manthang houses three key monasteries of the region: Jampa Monastery (home to a 35-meter massive clay statue of Maitreya Buddha), Thubchen Monastery (a 15th-century relic with a high wooden pillar and mystical light) and Chode Monastery (the living heart of Lo, which is home to young monks in training).

After exploring this once-forbidden kingdom that was kept out of the world, you will turn in for the night. Tomorrow, you will explore the surrounding wonders of Lo, sky burial sites and cliffside gompas.

Creative Tip: From the top of the pass, you can use a telephoto lens to capture a compressed photograph of the city and the surrounding hills into one dense and dramatic frame. At Lo Manthang, you can try shooting through door frames, archways of prayer flags to add more layers to your composition.

    1. Max. Elevation:3840m
    2. Duration:2 to 3 hours
  • Day07

    Excursion day at Lo Manthang

Today’s mission in your Upper Mustang Photography Tour packages is to seek the hidden, sacred and forgotten. Lo Manthang lies on the north side of Chhoser Valley, which is a valley of eroded canyons, sky-caved and wind-worn cliffs. You start your excursion by ascending the nearby cliffs that unveil the towering rock formation of the Chhoser Valley, which resembles the frozen sand waves.

Then, make a stop at a major and legendary highlight of the region, Jhong Cave. It is a five-level labyrinth that is carved into the sandstone cliff. This cave is believed to be over 2,000 years old. For the next stop, you will head toward Nyphu and Garphu Monasteries, these two remote cliffside monasteries feel like relics from another planet.

Nearby is another ancient landmark, a sky burial site where traditionally the bodies were offered to vultures as a return to nature. The ritual is rarely performed nowadays, but the site still remains quiet, windswept and deeply spiritual. In the afternoon, you will return to Lo Manthang. Take your time wandering through the alleys again, this time, with more familiarity in your lens.

On this day, you have seen Lo from above, from caves and from monasteries. So, now you can capture its true essence with a deeper understanding. Tonight is your second and final night within the walled premises of Lo Manthang. Soak in the tranquil moment under the stars, no light pollution, no noise, just wind and sky. Tomorrow, you begin your journey back.

Creative Tip: Capture the golden hour architecture shots, early morning and later afternoon light create beautiful contrasts on the whitewashed walls and red gompas. You can climb to Lo Mantnang Palace viewpoint and use a wide-angle lens to capture the walled city layout and alleys. Also, Lo Mantnag is a palette of earth tones with its red and deep blue skies, so you can create a photo series based on color themes to set moods and narratives.

    1. Max. Elevation:3840m
  • Day08

Lo Manthang to Syangbochen (3,800m/ 12,467ft) drive: 1.5 to 2 hours

Your return journey to the south begins with a final glance at the fortress Kingdom of Lo. But you don’t need to stow your camera yet.  The return route reveals new light, reverse perspective and a less-rushed moment. During the drive back, you will have enough time to explore the side alleys, revisit the prominent monasteries and soak in the slow-paced lifestyle of the traditional villages.

The drive will once again pass through Ghami Village, the spine-like village of Upper Mustang. There is over 300-meter-long mani wall in Ghami, which is inscribed with mantras. Then, you will head toward the next destination in this descending route, Dhakmar Village. The red cliffs here erupt from the earth like a wall of fire. Early to mid-morning offers the best color contrast here.

Then, the drive route further descends to Ghiling Village. The crumbling walls, strong wind and golden barley fields on this stop create a moody palette. By late afternoon, you arrive at Syangbochen. It is a quiet settlement backed by layered hills. Although it is less dramatic than Lo, it is a peaceful and soulful pace that is ideal for slow evening shooting.

Creative Tip: As you have already passed through these landscapes, change your perspective and challenge yourself to capture the beauty with a new vision. Go beyond the obvious full-frame shots, re-shoot with low-angle light and long shadows. You can try time-lapse if you have a tripod; shadows here dance quickly over the stone and clay landscape.

    1. Max. Elevation:3800m
    2. Duration:1.5 to 2 hours
  • Day09

Drive from Syangbochen to Kagbeni (2,804m/ 9,199ft): 2 hours

In the return part of the Upper Mustang Tour for photography, you won’t just feel the change in altitude. It is a total shift in texture, mood and palette. You are retracing the landscapes you climbed through, but this time with deeper eyes and a memory-rich frame of reference. You start your descent with a stop at Samar, a high-altitude village perched above the eroded cliffs.

Then, the further route leads to Bhena, where the wind speaks louder and the landscape opens like an ancient scroll frozen in time. At Chele, the route descends through a sculpted ravine and the dramatic red walls. Here, the canyons become your natural studio; they are etched with shadow lines and rich textures. After crossing the cliffside caves glowing in the afternoon haze at Chhusang, you travel to Tangbe, which is tucked behind cliffs and orchards.

Finally, the Kali Gandaki opens its arms to welcome you back to Kageni. This is the same village where this photographic journey commenced. But, you are viewing it with a new lens now; emotionally, visually and spiritually.

Creative Tip: You can use the ND filter to slow the prayer flag movement and blend motion and stillness in a single shot. Look for contrast, frame organiz motion against the geometric rock lines. You can also use bracket exposures for cliffs and caves, this bend brings out details in both bright rocks and dark interiors.

    1. Max. Elevation:2804m
    2. Duration:2 hours
  • Day10

    Drive to Marpha (2,650m/ 8,694ft) via Muktinath (3,710m/ 12,171ft): 5 to 6 hours

This is another day of transition and contrast. After a warm breakfast at Kagbeni, a short uphill drive will bring you to Muktinath. This is one of the holiest sites in Nepal that is revered by both Hindus and Buddhists. Muktiath Temple is framed by barren cliffs and scattered chortens and buzzes with the quiet energy of devotion.

On your way back to Muktinath, you will take a detour through Jharkot. This is a medieval village with high stone walls, wind-worn houses and a fortress-like monastery that sits at the edge of a canyon. As you descend further to Jomsom, the wind starts to pick up, funneled through Kali Gadaki Valley in the afternoon. Although you have passed through here before, the light and angles now favor south-facing compositions.

Finally, in the late afternoon, you arrive at Marpha. It is an exquisite village that is known for its apple orchards, stone-paved alleys and timeless architecture. Compared to the raw cliffs of Upper Mustang, Marpha feels tidy, soft and meditative, like a monastery of daily life. Tonight, you will rest in the gentle hum of Marpha.

Creative Tip: At Muktinath, you can use a 50 or 85mm lens to respectfully isolate devotees from their spiritual surroundings. You can take some quick street photography in Jomsom’s main bazaar to contrast between trekkers, locals and alluring infrastructure. And, shoot from low angles in narrow lanes to emphasize the shit between soft village curves and towering peaks on the backdrop.

    1. Max. Elevation:2650m
    2. Duration:5 to 6 hours
  • Day11

Drive back to Pokhara (822/ 2,696ft): 5 to 6 hours

After spending days amid the high desert landscape and ancient kingdom, on this day of your Upper Mustang Photography Tour itinerary, you will make you descend through fertile valleys, thick forests and bustling market towns. With every stop on this downhill drive, the air grows warmer, the landscape greener and the texture softer.

Your drive on this day begins retracing the scenic Kali Gandaki River Valley towards Tatopani, which is famed for its natural hot springs. Here, dense forest and terrace fields start to appear gradually like emerald islands. This is a perfect destination for rest and rejuvenation; it also has great spots for candid photography. The last leg of the drive takes you through Beni.

Beni is a bustling trading town that is nestled in a wide valley surrounded by lush hills. Finally, you arrive at Nepal’s lakeside paradise, Pokhara. Back in this beautiful city, the lush lake, boat-filled shores and distant snow-capped peaks create a soothing and cinematic finale. Pokhara’s calm is a perfect place to review your photographic journey and digest the epic stories your camera has captured.

Creative Tip: You can use the reflections in the river during calm moments to create symmetrical compositions. Capture the misty atmosphere around the hot springs and focus on close-ups of water droplets glistening on skin or rocks. Reflection of mountain on lake’s calm waters, sunset shots over Phewa Lake, or evening street photography around lakeside areas are other creative prospects.

    1. Max. Elevation:822m
    2. Duration:5 to 6 hours
  • Day12

Morning drive to Sarangkot (1,600m/ 5,249ft) for sunrise view and afternoon drive back to Kathmandu (1,400m/ 4,593ft): 6 to 8 hours

Perched on hills above Pokhara, Sarangkot is a legendary viewpoint that offers panoramic views of the Annapurna range and serene Phewa Lake below. In this morning's hike, you will have the opportunity to capture the Annapurna massif glowing in warm hues and the iconically photogenic fishtail of Machhapuchhre.

After soaking in the sunrise, you descend back to Pokhara for breakfast and some last-minute exploration or souvenir shopping. In the evening, you begin your scenic drive back to Kathmandu. The winding highway snakes across lush valleys, river gorges and terraced hillside. The drive will provide ample window views to reflect on your unforgettable Upper Mustang adventure.

You will arrive back in Kathmandu by evening, where the lively atmosphere and city’s lights will greet you. Take your time to rest, celebrate your journey and maybe begin planning for the next part of the Himalayas that you want to explore.

Creative Tip: Use a wide-angle lens for sweeping landscape and try to time-lapse sequence to capture the magical progression from pre-dawn to sunrise as the golden hues of the sun slowly spill over the snow-clad peaks. You can also capture the short of terraced fields and roadside villages bathed in golden afternoon light.

    1. Max. Elevation:1400m

    Customer Reviews

    • I am a professional photographer and I sell images on stock photo and other image platforms. I saw a photo of Upper Mustang on Instagram posted by my friend, and I became very curious—I also wanted to visit the place.

I searched online and found many companies offering Upper Mustang treks, but I was looking for the best spots for photography. Then I found Eco Holidays Nepal. Their trek cost and details matched what I needed, so I contacted Mr. Dhruba. He guided me through everything, including permits and the packing list.

I came to Nepal, started the tour, and successfully completed it. I feel very lucky to have captured those special moments—the photos came out really interesting and beautiful. I especially want to thank Mr. Dharel for extending my trip by two days so I could take photos in the evening, night, and early morning.

I was also lucky to have great weather conditions throughout. I want to thank my guide and Mr. Dhruba Dharel for helping me complete this tour. I am so happy and satisfied. I truly recommend Eco Holidays Nepal for this tour.

When I took photos in the morning, it looked completely different from the afternoon, evening, and even at night. Every photo turned out so beautiful that I couldn’t believe it. I had never seen a place like this before.

    Upper Mustang Photography Tour FAQS

    Essential Information

    Upper Mustang Photography Trip Difficulty

The Upper Mustang Photography Tour is an iconic adventure designed to bring you face-to-face with one of the Himalaya’s most visually striking landscapes. You don’t need to hike for hours or traverse the rough mountain terrain to enjoy this tour. As this is a fully guided experience, the usual stresses of remote traveling, route planning, lodging, permits and local logistics are entirely taken care of by our expert team. From the moment you start your photography journey, you are in capable hands.

Our experience guides and drivers handle everything, allowing you to solely focus on the experience, landscape, culture, stories and photography. That said, while the tour is physically easy, it does bring the spirit of the raw Himalayas with it. You will drive in a comfortable 4WD vehicle across Nepal’s most remote and beautiful regions. The roads can be bumpy, dusty and rugged as they wind through dramatic canyons and high-altitude valleys.

But, instead of the need to trek for hours, you will be driven directly to remote villages, hidden monasteries and the panoramic ridgelines. This will give you access to awe-inspiring photographic opportunities with minimal walking. As you will be traversing only up to an altitude of 3,840 meters (12,598 feet), the risk of altitude sickness is low. However, it is still part of the environment, so we pace the journey carefully, allowing for proper acclimatization and rest.

Best Time for This Photography Tour

In Upper Mustang, time doesn’t just pass; it paints different colors on the landscape. The eroded cliffs flow like fire, prayer flags dance in the Himalayan tune and the shadows stretch long across the ochre-colored valleys. So, to truly capture the spirit of Mustang through your lens, timing is everything. Although the best seasons for trekking in Nepal, like spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November), are considered the most suitable period for this tour, other seasons also bring their unique charm to this year-round destination.

    Upper Mustang Photography Tour

    Spring (March to May)

Spring is one of the finest seasons for Upper Mustang Photography Tour packages. During this nature’s season, the skies are crisp and open, offering unobstructed views of the Himalayan peaks. The temperatures are also moderate, warm during the day, cool at night, making drives and short walks comfortable. What makes spring truly exceptional is the sharp contrast in landscapes. In the lower regions, rhododendrons bloom like wildfire and offer breathtaking contrast before you rise to the arid desert.

Mustang Temperatures in Spring: 10°C to 18°C (daytime) and -5°C to 5°C (nighttime)

    Summer (June to August)

While most of Nepal is drenched in rainfall during this season, the Upper Mustang remains largely dry even during the core monsoon season. This region lies in the rain shadow zones of the Himalayas, so it receives very low precipitation compared to the lower region trekking routes. This is the Mustang’s secret season, when the rest of Nepal slows down, and this region opens up in color and culture. The terraced fields bloom with barley and buckwheat and skies turn dramatic with scattered clouds, creating cinematic and moody backdrops. This season is also is time when Lo Manthang celebrates the famous Tiji Festival (usually in May or June), it is an explosion of color, masked dances and ancient Tibetan rituals.

Mustang Temperatures in Summer: 15°C  to 22°C (daytime) and 5°C  to 8°C (nightime)

    Autumn (September to November)

Autumn is another best Upper Mustang Photography Tour periods. The air is crisp, the skies turn sapphire and the clarity of this season is second to none. You will catch the razor-sharp, stunning mountain views every day, especially in the early morning and evening hours. As the landscape begins to dry and crack under the post-monsoon sun, it gives the high-altitude arid terrain its signature texture. In autumn, the villages are also busy with harvest, farmers in their traditional attire, golden fields and prayer flags fluttering from every rooftop. This is a season of balance, perfect light, stable weather and energetic village life.

Mustang Temperatures in Autumn: 10°C to 18°C (daytime) and -2°C to 6°C (nighttime)

    Winter (December to February)

Upper Mustang in winter is cold, dry and raw. The days feel okay under the sun, but as soon as the night hits, the cold is intense. Still, this ancient hidden kingdom is stark, silent and stunning. The snowfall occasionally dusts the highlands, adding a surreal touch to the landscape. There are only a few tourists around, the trail is quiet and the sky is still. Due to the biting cold, many locals migrate to the south. So, guesthouses may be closed and some roads could be blocked by snow.

Mustang Temperatures in Winter: 0°C to 8°C (daytime) and -2°C  to -10°C (nightime)

Your journey to Upper Mustang is a passage through landscapes that gradually unfold in the shadow of the wind-sculpted cliffs and red-walled monasteries. Every stop on this route is a haven, may not be of luxury but of quiet stories. The accommodation in Upper Mustang is simple yet soulful. The rooms are modest, usually with twin beds, a comfortable mattress, pillow and blanket. As for bathrooms, they are on a shared basis in most places.

Electricity at the higher altitudes is limited and may be solar-reliant. So, charging your camera gear will require patience and planning. It is best to bring a high-capacity power and a universal adapter to charge your camera and devices. Wi-Fi services are also available at teahouses, but they don’t come with high bandwidth and are not always reliable. You need to pay extra cost for using such services at the teahouses.

    Drinking Water

Although you will not be sweating like long hours of trekking, it is still important to keep your hydration level balanced in this photography tour to Upper Mustang. Drinking sufficient water during this tour will help you prevent the risk of altitude sickness. There are water taps along the way, but it is not safe for direct consumption. Even in the major landmarks like Jomsom or Kagbeni, untreated water may carry bacteria, viruses, or parasites unfamiliar to your body.

The best way to stay hydrated safely is to drink boiled water from the teahouses or use water purification tablets or drops to drink water from a clean station. Water bottles are also available, but they are not environmentally friendly. The price for bottled mineral water also increases with the increase in altitude due to the difficulty in transportation.

Aim to drink at least 3 to 4 liters of water per day, especially when hiking long distances. If you are photographing in direct sun or wind-exposed cliffs, drink even more. Don’t wait for thirst to remind you.

    Training and Preparation Tips

For the Upper Mustang Photography Tour, you don’t need mountaineer-level endurance. But, the terrain, elevation and remoteness do ask for quiet strength and smart preparation, especially when you are carrying your camera gear, chasing light and hiking for creative shots. The preparation is not just about the hiking shape, but about being ready; physically, mentally and creatively.

You will be traversing up to an altitude of 4,000 meters across dry ridges, rocky paths and wind-blasted plateaus. So, the dry air and altitude fatigue can still affect your energy even if you are traveling in a 4WD vehicle. For this photography tour, you don’t need to be ultra fit, but basic stamina makes the experience much smoother. You can prepare yourself for the journey with daily walks, core exercises (planks, light yoga, stretches) and shoulder/back mobility

Focussing on these aspects will build your strength and help you with balance and postures while shooting. Also, this isn’t a fast-paced tour and that's the beauty of it. But the remoteness of the region means basic comfort, a slower rhythm of life and limited facilities. Thus, you need to prepare yourself mentally for it as well to ensure that your journey remains comforting and near your expectation line.

    Permits and Regulations

Beyond a remarkable trekking and touring destination, Upper Mustang is also a protected cultural treasure, which is often referred to as the ‘Last Forbidden Kingdom’. Traveling in this region is highly regulated by the Nepali government to preserve its ancient Tibetan heritage, fragile environment and spiritual integrity. So, before your lens captures the dramatic canyons and windswept monasteries, there are a few important legal checkpoints to cross.

Permits Required for Upper Mustang Photography Tour

Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)— US$ 30 per person

Restricted Area Permit for Upper Mustang— US$ 500 per person (for the first 10 days and need to pay additional US$ 50 per day after that)

Even if you are not trekking in the traditional sense, this regulation still applies to all photography tours and overland jeep trips. You will need to pass through the same controlled and restricted corridor. If you are planning to shoot documentary-style content, conduct interviews, or film commercially, make sure to obtain a media or filming permit in advance. These permits are separate from your standard travel permits and are strictly monitored in Mustang due to the cultural sensitivity.

**Note: Eco Holidays Nepal will handle all your permit needs for you. If you require a media or filming permit, notify us prior to your arrival**
