If the skies are clear, you are also treated to your first glimpse of the Himalayan ridges stretching to the sky. Annapurna and Dhaualgiri are often glowing in the morning sun as you reach the outskirts of Pokhara.

After landing in Pokhara, the shift in the atmosphere can be felt in an instant. This city, surrounded by lush hills, lakes and rice terraces, is the gateway to the Annapurnas. From here, a private jeep or a tourist bus will take you northwest of the city toward the trailhead. The drive is short and snakes along paved and gravel roads.

You will get a chance to admire vibrant small settlements along the road, river valleys and terraced farmlands before reaching Nayapul. This is the official starting point of your trek. Take a breather and stretch your legs, your thrilling journey to the heart of the central Himalayas begins from here. From Nayapul, the Annapurna Base Camp Trek trails hug the edge of Modi Khola moving along following the jeep tracks.

The trek on this day is gentle with just mild ups and downs, which will be a good warm-up for the first day’s trek. After about half an hour of trekking, you will arrive at Birethanti, this is where the route to Ghandruk and Ghorpani diverges. You will continue following the western trail and cross a long suspension bridge

As you gain altitude, the path transitions to more rural terrain and you will pass the scattered hamlets of Sudame and Hille. You will find traditional stone houses perched along the trail as you cross this stretch. Then, during the final section, you will follow a steady climb toward Tikhe Dhunga. This, the first overnight stop of your trek, is a small and charming village that is surrounded by tall forest ridges and terraced fields.

After a restful night at Tikhe Dhunga, it's time to begin your full-cycle trekking adventure. Leaving the beautiful village, you will ascend on a steep section and head toward the suspension bridge over the Bhurungdi Khola. And, then comes the stone staircases to Ulleri, this is one of the most iconic segments in the Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill. You will need to cross thousands of uneven steps that zigzag along the hillside.

You will arrive at Uller after about one and a half hours of trek. This is a large and beautiful terraced Magar village perched on the hillside. The distant first glimpse of the Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri and Hiunchuli will break the fatigue of the steady climb. From Ulleri, the paths stretch across the forested ridgeline and into the shade of lush rhododendron woodland.

Soon, you arrive at Banthanti Village, which is a cozy cluster of teahouses surrounded by lush greenery. You will continue your walk across the forested trail to reach Nagethanti Village. During the spring season, the forest here bursts with colors of red, pink and white as rhododendrons take over the landscape.

During the final stretch, the trail gently climbs along the misty forest corridor and as he trees begin to thin out, you arrive at the open meadows and scattered lodges of Ghorepani. • Day03

Morning hike to Poon Hill (3,210m/ 10,531ft) and trek to Tadapani (2,630m/ 8,628ft): 5 to 6 hours

This is one of the iconic days on the trail. Today, you will explore the first major highlight of the Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill Trek. You will begin your morning hike pre-dawn and follow the steep stone staircases that wind through a silent rhododendron forest to reach Poon Hill. As you reach the open ridge of Poon Hill, you will be greeted with the first light of the morning that cracks over the horizon.

The golden hues of light slowly spill over the majestic peaks like Annapurna I, Annapurna South, Dhaulagiri, Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli, Nilgiri and Tukuche Peak. More than the sunrise view, it will feel like a Himalayan ceremony. After soaking in the unforgettable Himalayan panorama or maybe sipping hot tea from the hilltop stop while you are at it, you then descend back to Ghorepani.

After enjoying your breakfast, you will leave Ghorepani and ascend through the thick rhododendron forest. The winding trail leads across the Deurali Pass from where you can catch a stunning glance of Annapurna before descending into deeper forest. You will walk along the ridgelines and stone path to a small clearing with basic teahouses.

During the last leg of the trek, you will cross a small bridge over a gurgling stream and after a short push, you arrive at Tadapani. This is a scenic ridge-top village that is nestled deep within the forest. The views of Machhapuchhre, Hiunchuli and Annapurna South are simply breathtaking from here.

This beautiful high-altitude settlement feels peaceful and remote. As there are fewer trekkers than in Ghorepani and the village is surrounded by lush forest, Tadapani gives a truly secluded vibe.

    3. Distance:10km
  • Day04

    Tadapani to Chhomrong (2,170m/ 7,119ft): 5 to 6 hours

After a warm breakfast at Tadapani, you will follow a descending trail through dense forest echoing with the birdsongs. Diverting from the forested ridgeline, you will make your descent into the valley below. Soon, you arrive at Chiule Village, cutting through lush rhododendron and bamboo jungle.

From Chuile, the trail undulates with short switchbacks and the path gradually opens up toward Gurjung Village. This small village is perched above the hillside and from here, the landscape transitions as it gives way to agricultural terraces. Then, from Gujrung, the path winds up along he side of the valley and gradually takes you to Chhomrong Village.

Chhomrong is one of the largest and most scenic Gurung villages in the entire Annapurna region. At this village, you will get to witness the traditional stone houses, prayer flags fluttering in the wind and vegetable gardens that climb up the slopes. Arriving at this traditional mountain feels like reaching a beautiful outpost that is at the edge of something great.

You start your day in the picturesque village of Chhomrong, surrounded by the terraced farms and the towering snow-capped sentinels. Leaving the village behind, you will descend on a steep stone staircase that leads down to Chhomrong Khola. You will cross a sturdy suspension bridge here before beginning your ascent.

The uphill trail winds through lush forest and the air in this stretch thickens with the moisture of rhododendrons and ferns. After a while, you arrive at Upper Sinuwa, a small ridge settlement with few teahouses. On a clear day, the broad view of Machhapuchhre is simply breathtaking from here. The path continues to diver deeper into the jungle with cooler and shaded sections.

Then, the path undulates slightly and drops to Bamboo Village. This village is situated amidst a thick cluster of bamboo, thus the name. You will take a break here, enjoying the scenery, then it's time to continue your trek following the narrow Modi Khola Valley. This sketch passes through quiet tunnels of bamboo and tall trees and you will eventually arrive at Dovan.

This is a small cluster of lodges tucked into the forest above the river. Although Bamboo Village doesn’t offer wide views, the sound of the river cascading below and the rustle of the trees above deepen the sense that you have entered the core part of the Annapurna Sanctuary.

  • Day06

Dovan to Machhapuchhre Base Camp (3,700m/ 12,139ft): 6 to 7 hours

This day itinerary in your Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill marks one of the most exhilarating and scenic sections of this classical base camp adventure. The day begins following a cool and shaded path under thick forest cover with the Modi Khola roaring far below. As you keep walking on the uphill route, you arrive at Himalaya, a small settlement with a couple of teahouses.

Beyond the Himalaya, the landscape becomes increasingly rugged and the trail follows through a narrow gorge with towering rock walls on both sides. Continuing with the gradual climb, you will soon reach Hinku Cave. This is a large rock overhang that once served as a temporary shelter for the early trekking adventures in Annapurna.

From here, the trail gradually gains altitude and you will notice the shift in vegetation. The lush bamboo and rhodoeron trees are replaced by the shrubs and alpine flora. The next major stop en route is Deurali, a beautiful hamlet perched on a ridge over the river. Moving forward, you follow the western bank of Modi Khola, admiring the stunning expansive view of the glacial valley below.

You will continue your uphill ascent across rocky terrain and scree slope of landslide-prone zones to reach Machhapuchhre Base Camp. At the base camp, you will be greeted by the 360° panorama of the towering Himalayan giants like Hiunchuli, Gangapurna, Annapurna South, Annapurna and other adjacent peaks.

Due to altitude, the air feels thinner and cooler, especially in the evening. So, layered warm clothing here is essential. Tonight you will stay at one of the tehaoues at the MBC, where the hospitality is humble but heartwarming.

The trek from MBC to Annapurna Base Camp is short in terms of distance. But every step you take will bring you closer to one of the most dramatic high-altitude amphitheaters on the planet.

Your morning at MBC begins with crisp alpine chill in the air and you will get the opportunity to witness the epic sunrise views of Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, Gangapurna and Machhapuchhre itself. Leaving the base camp, you will follow a gentle ascent on the path that winds across the wide glacial valley. You are now well above the treeline, the snow-draped slopes, glacial moraines and rock-strewn paths will surround you here.

After witnessing and soaking in the grandeur of the Annapurna Sanctuary, it’s time to move along with your return trek. Most trekkers start their adventure early from the Annapurna Base Camp, taking time to relish one final unforgettable sunrise view over Annapurna I and other surrounding peaks. The golden glow that soaks the towering peaks becomes an incredible farewell spectacle that will etch into your memory forever.

From the base camp, the trail retraces the same path back to MBC and then further to Deurali and Himalaya. You will gradually lose altitude as you continue walking downhill in the Modi Khola Valley. The landscape also slowly starts to transition, from the high alpine landscape and rocky highlands begin to soften as the greenery slowly starts to reappear.

The next portion of the trail winds down across Dovan and the spot that you passed a few days ago. This is an ideal place to rest before you move along with your final descent toward Bamboo. The cool and shaded path lined with bamboo groves, ferns and rhododendrons offers a refreshing contrast to the alpine you left behind this morning.

Eventually, you arrive at Bamboo Village, a quiet settlement among the dense cluster of bamboo that you have already passed before. Customer Reviews

  • Our families, along with my girlfriend's family, planned a short trip to Nepal. After researching, we decided on the Annapurna Base Camp Trek, a famous and popular trek in Nepal. We found that Eco Holidays Nepal was the best option for our trek. We contacted Mr. Dhruba, and when we asked if there were any additional options we could add, he suggested Poon Hill, which was on the way and a perfect addition to our itinerary.

We arrived in Nepal, and Mr. Dhruba personally picked us up at the airport and dropped us off at the hotel. Our trek started on the second day, and it lasted about 11 days. We were surprised at how quickly time passed and how smoothly everything went. The best part was the sunrise at Poon Hill and the stunning view from Annapurna Base Camp. It was truly worth it.

I want to thank all the team members, guides, and porters, as well as everyone at Eco Holidays Nepal, for helping us successfully complete our trek. Thanks a lot!

  • In 2025, my 4 university friends and I planned the Annapurna Base Camp trek via Poon Hill from Norway. We contacted Mr. Dhruba from Eco Holidays Nepal for the trek and met him at the airport. Initially, we were a bit curious and wondered if our vibes would match, but as soon as we met him, we felt at ease. Once the trek started, we met our guide, and his knowledge and vibes made the whole experience fabulous. It turned out to be the best trek we’ve had with our university friends. I’m already thinking about coming back to Nepal with my family for the next trek. A big thanks to Mr. Dhruba and the entire team for making our journey unforgettable. Thanks a lot!

  •  Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill Trek Difficulty

The difficulty level of Annapurna Base Camp with Poon Hill is at a moderate level. Due to its low level of difficulty compared to other high-altitude adventures in the Himalayas, this journey is accessible to a wide range of trekkers, including first-time high-altitude hikers and those with decent physical fitness. Although the trek doesn’t involve any technical climbing like the Everest Base Camp Trek or the Annapurna Circuit Trekking, the trail still demands a good level of endurance.

Best Time to Trek

The best time to do Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill is during spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November). These peak trekking months in Nepal offer the most favorable weather conditions, clear mountain views and safe trail conditions, rewarding you with an experience that is both visually stunning and physically manageable.

  Spring (March to May)

Spring is one of the most popular trekking seasons in Nepal. The lower hills around Ghorepani and Tadapani come alive with the colorful blooming of rhododendron flowers, which makes the trekking trail vibrant. The skies are generally clear in the morning, offering stunning views of the Himalayan giants. It is also a wonderful time to admire the flora and fauna of the Annapurna Sanctuary.

Daytime Temperatures: 5°C to 20°C

Nighttime Temperatures: Can drop to -5°C

  Autumn (September to November)

Unlike other seasons, autumn is widely considered the ideal trekking season in Nepal. As the monsoon rain clears away dust and pollution, it results in crystal-clear skies and iconic mountain views. The weather is stable, the trails are dry and the temperatures are comfortable throughout the way. This is also a culturally enriching point, which boasts major festivals in Nepal like Dashain and Tihar.

  Winter (December to February)

Accommodation and Food During Trek

The accommodation along the Annapurna Base Camp Hike via Poon Hill follows the traditional teahouse trekking model. You will stay at locally run lodges that offer basic accommodation and meals in the remote Himalayan villages. These teahouses are spaced out along the trekking route at regular intervals. They are affordable, social and functional; teahouses offer everything a trekker needs for a comfortable high-altitude journey.

Basic private twin rooms with two single beds, mattresses, pillows and blankets are the standard lodging facilities at the teahouses. Attached bathrooms may be available in the lower elevations. But, at the higher altitudes, they are rare as you ascend; most lodges have shared squat and communal washing areas.  You can charge your devices at the teahouses, use the internet and take hot showers, but they all come at an extra cost.

Drinking Water

Staying hydrated is an absolute necessity for high-altitude treks where the mountain air is dry and the trekking days are longer. This can easily lead to dehydration and can also trigger the symptoms of AMS. During the trek, you need to drink at least 3 to 4 liters of water per day. Increase the intake as you ascend higher to prevent altitude-related dehydration. Remember, it's best to sip regularly rather than chugging large amounts at once.

Along the trekking trail, you can find tap water at clear stations and boiled or bottled water at the teahouses. Although locals drink the water from clean stations, you should treat it with a solution or filtration system before consuming it. Bottled water is sold throughout the route, but is discouraged due to its high cost and environmental impact. So, buying bottled water at the teahouses is a safe and environmentally friendly option to meet the daily hydration quota.

Training and Preparation Tips

Annapurna Base Camp Trek via Poon Hill is not a technical climb. But it certainly demands good physical conditioning, mental readiness and thoughtful preparation. This trekking trail involves steep stone staircases, long daily walks (5 to 6 hours on average) and altitude gain, even if it doesn’t cross 5,000 meters. Ideally, you should start your training 6 to 8 weeks before the trek. If you are new to hiking or physical activity, you should give yourself 10 to 12 weeks.

Even if you are moderately fit, some level of pre-trek training will significantly improve your endurance level, comfort and overall experience on the trail. Your key focus for the preparation should be on cardiovascular endurance, leg strength, core stability and hiking-specific conditioning. It's best if you are able to comfortably walk 10 to 15 km for multiple days while carrying your backpack.

Mental Preparation for Trek

While physical fitness is an absolute necessity for a high-altitude Himalayan journey, your mental strength often becomes your greatest asset. The multi-day treks like Annapurna Base Camp via Poon Hill will test your endurance, patience and motivation, especially on long climbing sections, during struggles with fatigue, or when the weather conditions are not ideal. So, the mental preparation is not all about that toughness. It is about having the right mindset, coming in terms with your limits, being adaptable and staying positive even in hard times.
