    Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trekking 19 days

    Classic Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trekking, a unique and exclusive walk visiting both sides of Everest around Solu and the high scenic Khumbu region. It also offers a taste of local Sherpa cultures and witnesses other hill tribes' traditions.

    Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek leads you to a peaceful undisturbed trail following the footsteps of early legendary mountaineers Tenzing and Hillary who first summit Mt. Everest on May 29th, 1953 using this original route for the classic climb from Jiri to base camp.

    Lukla airport was constructed by the late Hillary in the mid-1970s where most travelers fly into Lukla from Kathmandu in a short duration time frame for the trek towards the high Khumbu and Everest base camp.

    This will be a great walk on the less traveled route where you can soak into more local culture and customs of great interest. As this adventurous Classic Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trek commences with an overland drive from Kathmandu to reach Shivalaya town.

    A scenic town located on a verdant valley with clear views of Jugal Himal and Gaurishankar peaks, including rolling green hills covered with deciduous woodland that surrounds this nice town of Jiri.

    From Jiri, a short drive leads towards our point of trekking. Then head through rural farm villages populated with mixed of hill tribes of eastern Nepal. And then head towards high into the Sherpa country of Solu region, crossing the high and scenic Lamjura-la pass to reach one of the charming villages at Junbesi.

    With an interesting time at Junbesi, a slow walk leads towards Ringmo village to cross over Takshindo-la to reach the nice village of Nunthala and way down to warmer areas of Jubing. Now, our trail heads higher to more chilled areas at Bupsa and then at Surkhe village within the Khumbu region.

    After being in quiet areas of Solu with less number of trekkers, on joining the main trail coming from Lukla where you encounter more trekkers following the same trail to Everest Base Camp, as our route leads much higher visiting nice Sherpa villages adorned with prayer monuments called Mani-Wall and spinning bells.

    Slowly walk follows the raging Dudh-Kosi River and high above to reach at famed Namche Bazaar, the hub of Khumbu and Everest region, an exciting town and a large village with many facilities from well-stocked stores-shops-restaurants and banks including a nice Porsche lodge.

    At Namche, with time for a rest day to support against AMS (Acute Mountain Sickness), with acclimatization side walk and a short hike to some viewpoints facing incredible views of Everest, Amadablam, and Lhotse with an array of peaks.

    As the walk progress enters more beautiful areas at Tengboche, with its impressive monastery surrounded by a series of peaks with Everest and close views of majestic Amadablam, located in the midst of alpine woodland.

    Our adventure continues as tree lines disappear for arid and barren landscapes getting closer to the high mountains of Khumbu, then reaching our main target and highlighting at Everest base camp within massive glaciers and Khumbu jumbo Ice-Falls.

    After enjoying a magnificent time at base camp, our next adventure leads to a steep climb but worth the views enclosed with giant peaks that straddle the border with Tibet on the other side of the mountains, facing close views of Mt. Everest and lofty dome-shaped Mt. Pumori.

    After an incredible and exciting moment, our adventure leads downhill back to Namche Bazaar. And then back at Lukla, the gateway town for various treks around Khumbu, where the unique airstrip is located.

    Best Seasons for Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trekking:

    Nearly all months of the year except the monsoon wet months from mid-June to mid-September.

    March to May best time for clear views till the afternoon when wildflowers are in bloom with fantastic views of mountains. A pleasant day with more cold mornings and nighttime is expected.

    Another best time is October to December for clear views of peaks. With short sunlight, days can be cold in the morning and night time, depending upon the altitude and overnight stop.

    • Day01

      Reach Kathmandu via various international airline and transfer to hotel.

      On arrival, received by our staff and guide, transfer to your respective hotels in the hub of Kathmandu. After checking into your lovely rooms, and getting refreshed from jet-leg, join in with other members of Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trekking.

      Our guide/leader will brief us with information about the hotels-including detail of trekking regarding the local lodge, walks, views, history, and culture. A few important do’s and don’ts while you are with us having enjoyable times will also be short-listed.

      The evening includes a nice dinner (traditional Nepali foods) in a pleasant Nepalese restaurant with local cultural programs.

    • Day02

      Drive to Shivalya 1,930 – 9 hrs journey.

      Classic Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trekking begins early morning taking an overland journey from Kathmandu.We will be heading east of the valley to reach at Shivalaya, a small village by the bank of river.  To reach Shivalaya, we will be passing by  Jiri town, known by Switzerland of Nepal. After long drive of 9-10 hours, we will have overnight stop  at Shivalaya.

    • Day03

      Trek to Bhandar (Chyangma) 2,194m – 03 hrs and walk to Kenja 1,845 m – 04 hrs.

      Having breakfast after overnight stop in Shivalaya, next day begins walk to Bhandar. The trail will be pleasant with scenery of countryside.

      Walk on nice wide trail through farm villages and well tended terraces with downhill. After a short climb to a ridge then reach a nice village Kenja. It is situated on a valley beneath Pike Hill and Lamjura-la Pass with views of Numbur peaks. We will have overnight stay at Kejna.

    • Day04

      Gurase 3,050 m via Sete 2,575 m -06 hrs.

      Our second day walk of  to Everest Base Camp Trek via Jiri leads us to a long climb with steep slopes.So, we will  encounter  farm village and cool shade of alpine woodland to reach at Sete.

      From here on we will be into Sherpa dominated areas of Solu districtAfter a refreshing stop continue walk higher to reach our overnight stop at Gurase of much cooler climate.

      At Gurase located in the middle of rhododendron forest hence the name Gurase for rhododendron flower in Nepalese as well national flower of the country situated close to Lamjura-la pass.

    • Day05

      Junbesi 2,675m via Lamjura-la 3,530m – 06 hrs.

      Now air gets much cooler in the shade of alpine woodland with climb towards Lamjura-La pass.This is the first highest point of the walk around Solu before reaching Khumbu areas. After crossing this scenic pass, then on downhill  reach to the base of the hill at Toc-Toc, a small village.

      After a possible lunch break afternoon, a pleasant walk on winding path with short descend  reach Junbesi. It is a lovely Sherpa village for overnight stop after a long day walks. Today’s, Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trekking ends here.

    • Day06

      Nunthala (Manidingma) 2,190 m – 06 hrs.

      In Junbesi, you can get view of Numbur peaks towards north. As morning walk follows with short down and ups into woodland of blue pines, reach at Syalung Danda. Where you can catch views of Mt. Everest and other peaks of Khumbu area.

      Afterwards, walk leads to a long descend to reach a suspension bridge after crossing with uphill to Ringmo village. Furthermore, our route continues with climb to reach another scenic pass at Takshindo marked with Buddhist prayer monuments.

      A slow downhill walk past Takshindo village and its old monastery then trail follows into forest to reach at the bottom in Nunthala. Nunthala is  a moderate size village with mixed tribes  of Sherpa-Rai-Magar-Chettries-Dalit and Tamang.

      Moreover, it is  an interesting village for short walks around its rows of shops and lodge that lines the street of Nunthala village along with views of high Khumbu hills and peak.Nunthala will be a point for overnight stay.

    • Day07

      Trek to Bupsa Danda 2,250 m via Khair khola – 06 hrs.

      Early morning starts with long descend to reach a bridge over torrent Dudh Kosi River. And then with gradual winding uphill  reach a warm place at Jubing village. Which is populated with Kirat-Rai tribe and  a nice farm village for short break.

      After Jubing climb starts higher up to reach a large village of Kharikhola. You will see nice market square and religious monument of Stupa over there .Then cross over Khari-Khola (Stream) with steep climb for few hours to reach a cooler ridge at Bupsa Danda. Which is facing fantastic views of surrounding beautiful landscapes, we will have overnight stay.

    • Day08

      Trek to Surkhe 2,295 m – 06 hrs.

      From Bupsa in cool shade of woodland of pines-rhododendron and fir trees then walk continues uphill. During that time we will encounter number of farm houses and smaller villages to reach at Paiya (Pyuin), a farm village in the middle of alpine forest.

      After this village walk on pleasant wide path with few short ups and down to reach a high ridge above Surkhe village facing views of Lukla town and its air-strip runway. Then on long descend reach our overnight stop in a nice small village at Surkhe, which is directly south of Lukla town.

    • Day09

      Trek to Phakdingma 2,657 m – 04 hrs.

      Morning after breakfast walk lead close to Lukla town heading uphill through Ghai Kharka and Muse villages. With nice farm fields and terraces, climb  to a small village at Choplung, and then joini the trail from Lukla. After all walk follows Dudh-Kosi River valley and gorge towards our first overnight stop at Phadkingma village by the raging glacial Dudh-Kosi River.

      Phakdingma also called as Phakding only for short, while we have used the proper and correct words in respect for the name sake.

    • Day10

      Trek to Namche Bazaar 3,440 m – 06 hrs.

      Today  will be long walk with touch of high altitude.  So, morning starts with cross over river and walking past several nice Sherpa villages to reach at Monjo village. From there enter Sagarmatha National Park (listed as World Heritage Sites).

      Walk on river banks, so our route leads higher uphill into cool shade of rhododendron-oaks and pine tree forest. Along with views of Kongde, Kusum Khanguru and Tharmasakru peaks.

      Then reach our overnight destination at famous Namche Bazaar, a large village and town, offers many good restaurants, hotels, lodge, number of shops and stores includes Bank and Post-Office.

      At Namche, enjoy in the comfort of nice cozy lodge, with time to marvel the views of snow capped peaks.

    • Day11

      In Namche for rest to support acclimatization with short hike and excursion.

      A free and rest day to support with acclimatization in Namche before heading higher ground. Short walks to view point  towards Everest View Hotel takes nearly 3-4 hours both ways. Which offers excellent panorama of mountains with Everest and magnificent Amadablam.

      In Namche, visit museum where you can gain knowledge of Khumbu Sherpa, culture, flora-fauna. As well as gain information of mountaineering expedition history with rest of the afternoon at leisure.

    • Day12

      Trek to Tengboche 3,867 m – 05 hrs.

      After a pleasant time at Namche, our journey from Jiri to Everest Base Camp Trekking continues to a short climb, leading to good wide trail-facing views of Everest and Amadablam with an array of peaks. Next, our route leads into woodland, then descend towards Imjatse River to reach a small place in Phunke-Tenga, a possible lunch stop in the middle of a wood.

      Afternoon climb into forested areas facing views of Kangtenga-Thamaserku and other peaks. As a result, the walk brings us to a vast open plateau in Tengboche with its beautiful colorful Buddhist monastery. Then visit the monastery's interior, where you can witness monks and priests in religious activities with prayer.

      Tengboche is a scenic spot surrounded by high peaks with views of Everest and magnificent-looking Amadablam. Amidst the forest of rhododendron-magnolia-oaks-juniper-birch and fir tree lines, it is truly a great place for an overnight stop.

    • Day13

      Trek to Dingboche 4,365 m – 05 hrs.

      Morning catching the views of surrounding peaks,  walk leads downhill past Deoboche within woodland to reach Imjatse River. And then cross over a steel bridge and you will find end of green vegetation and tree lines from here.Thus walk leads into windswept dry and arid country to reach Pangboche. The last permanent village on route to Everest base camp where other settlement like lodge catering for travelers and trekkers are available.

      Then slowly walk leads past Pangboche heading higher with ups and down to a river. With the last climb of the day for an hour  reach a scenic Imjatse valley at Dingboche.  It is facing North Side of Amadablam with views of Island Peak towards east direction. Finally, we will have overnight stay over here.

    • Day14

      Trek to Lobuche 4,890 m – 05 hrs.

      After a nice overnight and rest day at Dingboche, morning walk leads to a short climb to a ridge marked with Buddhist prayer flags and some monuments.

      Our route leads on winding path above Pheriche valley with views of Cholatse and Taboche peaks. Then walk comes to a small place at Thugla, where massive Khumbu glacier melts into a raging river.

      After crossing a short bridge and climb to Thugla, stop for possible lunch and rest. A slow climb to a ridge top lines with memorial of unfortunate mountaineers who risk their life climbing high mountains around Khumbu and Everest.

      From here a good walk with gradual up  reach at Lobuche located on the corner of a wide valley beneath peaks of Lobuche East and West.And we will stop for overnight stay over there.

    • Day15

      Trek to Everest Base Camp 5,365 m and walk back to Gorakshep 5,180 m – 06 hrs

      Our adventure today leads to our main target, Everest base camp(also read: Is Everest Base Camp worth visiting), where the morning walk follows a flat valley with a slow climb to reach further. And then a steep climb to reach a ridge near Khumbu glacier.

      As the walk continues over rocky moraines and ice, reach the scenic flat area at Gorakshep, located on the bottom of Kalapathar and Mt. Pumori. They are on the route of Everest base camp. At Gorakshep, with a short break, catch breath in this high altitude with dry air.

      From Gorakshep, follow our lead guide heading further east to reach the much-awaited destination Everest Base Camp. So you will be greeted with marvelous views of Khumbu Ice Falls and glaciers looking above the peaks of Nuptse, Everest, and Lhotse. In the high mountaineering season of April to May, this grand spot is flooded with tents for expeditions.

      After an exciting time and achieving our goal walk back to Gorakshep for an overnight stop.

    • Day16

      Morning climb on top Kalapathar 5,545 m walk to Pangboche 3,900 m- 06 hrs.

      Starting early morning before breakfast climb to the top of rocky hill at above 5,545 m the highest spot of the adventure. Where you will be rewarded with overwhelming panorama of giant surrounding peaks with close views of Everest and Mt. Pumori.

      After a mesmerizing moment on top Kalapathar descend to Gorakshep for breakfast and carry on trekking down to Pheriche valley. And further to reach at Pangboche village for overnight stop with great scenic walk of the day.

    • Day17

      Trek to Namche Bazaar – 06 hrs.

      On completing our memorable and exciting adventure of  Everest base camp and  Kalapathar, an easy walk starts. From here without worry of high altitude sickness, sroute leads loosing elevation every hour of walks.

      From Pangboche, our walk goes downs and ups on nice scenic trail to Namche Bazaar for last night in Khumbu before Lukla.

    • Day18

      Trek to Lukla – 06 hrs.

      Our final day of walks  is a longer treks to reach back at Lukla. Starting with long descend to reach a river valley and at Sagarmatha National Park entrance and exit to Monjo village.

      Similarly, walk continues past Phakdingma with last short climb to reach at last overnight stay in Lukla before flying back to Kathmandu.

    • Day19

      Fly back to Kathmandu and transfer to hotel with free afternoon at leisure.

      Depending upon flight time for Kathmandu, morning with last breakfast in Khumbu and Lukla transfer to air terminal named after Tenzing and Hillary, the first to conquer Mt. Everest in 1953.

      As per flight schedule board in a smaller aircraft for sweeping short air journey to reach Kathmandu airport and then transfer back to your respective hotels.
