Day 01

Driving to Ulleri (2,050m/ 6,725ft) from Pokhara (822m/ 2,696ft) and trek to Ghorepani (2,874m/ 9,429ft): 2.5 to 3 hours (drive) and 4 to 5 hours (trek)

Your Poon Hill 2 Day Trek begins from Pokhara, the beautiful lakeside city of Nepal. The morning drive will take you out of the bustling streets into the countryside. Your driving route meanders past the terraced hillsides, cascading rivers and small farming villages. In this drive, you will catch a glimpse of the rural lifestyle in Nepal. In about 2.5 to 3 hours of driving from Pokhara, you will arrive at Ghorepani Village. This is a traditional Gurung settlement that is well-known for its long stone staircases and the panoramic views of the river valleys.

From Ulleri, you will get started on the major Poon Hill Trek Ghorepani route. From this beautiful Gurung village, the trail climbs gradually across lush rhododendron and oak forest. While following this stretch of the route, you will be accompanied by the sound of the flowing streams and birdsongs. During the spring season, this forest explodes with the breathtaking rhodoerong hues of red, pink and white.

Along the way, you will also pass small villages and teahouse stops, where trekkers take a short pause to rest and enjoy the local hospitality. As you gain elevation, the treeline gradually starts to thin out and open up vistas toward the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri ranges. Admiring these breathtaking backdrops on the trail, you will continue toward Ghorepani. This is one of the major villages in the Annapurna region that is inhabited by the Magar and Gurung ethnic groups.

Ghorepani Village is also the gateway to Poon Hill and is surrounded by a thick rhododendron forest with towering peaks in the backdrop. This village is well-known for its warm teahouses where the trekkers can rest, share stories and prepare for the climb to Poon Hill early in the morning.

Essential Information

Poon Hill 2 Days Trek Trek Difficulty

The Poon Hill 2 Day Trek is considered a moderately easy trek. This adventure is one of the most accessible short treks in the Annapurna region. You do not require prior trekking experience or technical climbing skills. That’s what this trek is often chosen by beginners, families and travelers who are in Nepal for a limited time. This Poon Hill Trek Ghorepani may be a short adventure, but it still offers an immersive Himalayan experience that takes you closer to the towering giants.

The main challenge of this short trek lies in the stone staircases and steady ascents, particularly in the climbing section from Ulleri to Ghorepani. However, the pace is manageable and there are plenty of resting points and teahouses along the way. As for the highest point of the trek, Poon Hill (3,210m/ 10,531ft), the altitude remains relatively low compared to other treks in Nepal. So, there is only a minimal risk of altitude sickness, making the trek doable for even first-time trekkers and children.

If you are planning this trek, the well-maintained trails, tahouses, accommodation and food,  options and the short duration of the trip in overall ease the journey. That being said, we still recommend a reasonable fitness level. You need to prepare to walk for about 4 to 6 hours per day and traverse uphill and downhill terrain quite often. Thus, preparing for the trek will make your experience more comfortable and enjoyable.

Best time to go for the Poon Hill 2 Days Trek

Almost all the trekking circuits of Nepal are best if done in the spring or autumn seasons. The same goes for the Poon Hill 2 Days trek. As a trekking agency, we suggest all visitors go for this trek during the months of March to May and September to November. The journey can also be stretched to the winter trekking window (December to February). Since a Jeep will take you directly to Ulleri, it is not possible in the rainy season. The Poon Hill trek can be completed in 2 Days only during the dry season.

During these months, you will enjoy the best experience that Poon Hill can ever give you. The main reason why we suggest the trekkers visit Poon Hill this month is because of the weather. Suppose you have read about any other travel blogs and articles about trekking in Nepal. In that case, you might be well aware of the fact that the temperature of the Nepali Himalayas is warm and relatively dry during the spring and autumn seasons. Therefore, you can enjoy the trek instead of hurrying to get back to your lodges because of cloudy skies and heavy rainfall, or even snowfall in many cases.

Poon Hill Trek 4 Days

Also, we have mentioned in the highlights that Poon Hill is best known for the fantastic sunrise view that you can see in the early morning. If you go in the winter or rainy season, you might miss this majestic view because of excessive clouds or rainfall. Besides, these seasons are also best for experiencing the beautiful nature surrounding the Poon Hill trail.

Drinking Water

Safe drinking water is an important consideration during the Poon Hill 2 Days Trek. Although the trekking route is short, you will still need to stay properly hydrated throughout the experience, especially during uphill sections and the dawn hike to Poon Hill. Bottled mineral water is available at almost every village shop and teahouses along the trail. But, buying multiple bottles is expensive at higher elevations and it also adds plastic waste problem in the mountains.

That’s why trekkers are strongly encouraged to carry a reusable water bottle or hydration bladder and refill it along the way. Teahouses and lodges during Poon Hill Trek Pokhara provide boiled water for a small charge. It is a safe, reliable, cost-efficient and eco-friendly option. There is also another alternative option, where you can refill your bottles at local taps, springs, or communal water stations. But make sure to use water purification tablets, chlorine drops, or a portable filtration system to treat the water before drinking it.

Training and Preparation

The Poon Hill Trek itinerary 2 Days is considered one of the easier trekking plans in the Annapurna region. However, a bit of preparation goes a long way to ensure comfort and enjoyment. As the Poon Hill Trek route involves long staircases, continuous uphill climbs and steep descents, being physically prepared will help complete the trek with less strain. For most trekkers, basic fitness is sufficient.

To conquer this short trekking route, you don’t need any mountaineering skills or prior trekking experience. But we still recommend that you build your stamina before the trek. Exercises that are focused on cardiovascular endurance, leg strength, stamina and balance exercises will come in handy as they make sure you will enjoy a comfortable experience. For the Poon Hill Trek Ghorepani, mental preparation is also equally important.

You will need to walk around 4 to 6 hours on each and although the altitude is not at an extreme level, continuous climbs can feel tiring for the unprepared. Thus, maintaining a steady pace, taking short breaks and staying hydrated will help you adapt better to the trail. With minimal but focused training and sensible preparation, this Poon Hill Trek short can become a rewarding and enjoyable adventure, even for beginners.

Necessary Permits

Like most trekking adventures in the Annapurna region, the Poon Hill 2 Days Trek requires the explorers to obtain an official permit before starting the journey. Despite being a short itinerary plan trek, you will still need to get the necessary permits as you will traverse deep into the conserved area. There is one essential permit and it is checked at various entry points along the way. This permit is essential for both legal and safety purposes.

  • Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP)

This permit can be obtained in Pokhara and Kathmandu from the Nepal Tourism Board office. If you are trekking through an agency like Eco Holidays Nepal, they will arrange the permits on your behalf. Make sure to carry your permits with you all the time. You will be required to show permits at the checkpoints in the villages like Birethantu and Ghorepani.

Poon Hill Hike Nepal

Is This Trek Suitable for Beginners?

Yes, the Poon Hill Trek Itinerary 2 Days is one of the most beginner-friendly treks in Nepal. It has a relatively short duration, moderate trails and low altitude, making it a great choice for first-time trekkers and families who want to experience the Himalayas without committing to a long and high-altitude trek route. The highest point you will reach in this trek is Poon Hill (3,210m/ 10,531ft). It is quite low compared to other high-altitude routes.

Thus, the journey is also safer for children, older trekkers and those who don’t have any prior trekking experience. The route is also comfortable and well-marked, although you will need to overcome the steady uphill climbs and staircases. Likewise, Poon Hill Trek is also supported by a good number of teahouses and rest stops along the way.

So, you are never too far from food, water, or a place to rest. With basic preparation and a reasonable fitness level, pretty much anyone can complete that trek comfortably.

Trek Cost

The Poon Hill 2 Days Trek cost generally depends on factors like transportation, accommodations, meals, permits and guide or porter services. On average, you can expect the total cost of a standard package to fall between US$ 280 to US$ 350 per person. So, the budget-friendly nature of this trek also makes it easier for the trekkers who are on a tight budget to enjoy the experience without worrying about breaking the bank. If you want, you can also trek independently, taking care of logistics and permit needs.

However, booking through a reputable agency ensures all the arrangements are handled smoothly, saving you both time and effort. At Eco Holidays Nepal, we are offering the 2-day Poon Hill Trekking Pokhara at just US$ 310 per person. This package covers expenses for permits, transportation, accommodation, meals and professional guiding services. We guarantee that you will enjoy a hassle-free trekking experience with reliable support from start to finish.

Travel Visa

All foreign travelers, besides Indian citizens, need to obtain a Nepal Travel Visa to enter the country. Don’t worry, the visa process is simple and convenient. You can easily obtain it either on your arrival at the Tribhuvan International Airport (TIA) or in advance from the Nepali embassy or consulate in your home country. To obtain the on-arrival tourist visa, you will just need to fill out a short application form (available online or at airport kiosks), provide a passport-sized photograph and pay the visa fee. There are three travel visas that you can apply for:

Nepal Travel Visa

  • 15 Days Visa— US$ 30
  • 30 Days Visa— US$ 50
  • 90 Days Visa— US$ 125

As this Poon Hill Trek Ghorepani has a duration of 2 days, a 15-day visa will be more than enough for most trekkers. It will be quite sufficient even if you are planning to stay a few extra days in Pokhara or Kathmandu before and after the trek.

**Note: Make sure that your passport is valid for at least 6 months from the date of your arrival and carry sufficient cash (US$ is recommended) to pay for the visa fee at the airport**

Fooding and Accommodation

One of the essential factors to check before the trek is the food and accommodation options. However, you do not have to worry about these while trekking on Poon Hill for two days. The route of this trek is full of several tea houses and lodges that provide the trekkers with cozy and comfortable rooms and a hot shower facility. Therefore, you can comfortably spend the night and become fresh throughout the trek.

Food in Poon Hill Ghorepani Trek

Now talking about the food services, you will get to enjoy a lot of varieties on the menu, even at that altitude. However, one thing to remember is that the price of everything on the menu is slightly higher than they are in Pokhara. The locals face difficulty managing everything at such a high altitude. Also, the transport fees will be increased because of the narrow and not-so-good roads. Therefore, paying a high nominal rate for such delicacies at such an altitude is not a big deal for enthusiastic trekkers.

Packing List for Poon Hill 2 Days trek

As this is just a two days trek, you can do a little packing. Remember to pack the most important things, like warm clothes, sunscreens, sunglasses, boots, a trekking rod, and plenty of water or other liquids. Also, as you will be heading to see the sunrise from the peak of Poon Hill, the trek will begin very early in the morning, meaning it will still be dark when you start the tour. As a result, remember to carry a headlamp with you.

While packing your backpack, carry the essentials and only a few extra things. This way, your baggage won't be too heavy for no reason. You will not have to worry about food, blankets, sleeping bags, etc., as food and accommodation will be in a local teahouse or guesthouse on the way.

One thing that you should remember while packing for this trek is that you should think of this as an easy trek and not like any circuit trek, where you need to carry a lot of necessary equipment. So, just focus on the right layers, necessary equipment, personal hygiene items and other essential items for the mountain journey.

Cultural Experience

Nepal is best known for its cultural, ethnic, and linguistic diversities. On top of that, if you go to the rural part of the country or the upper regions, you will experience the best Nepali culture. The Poon Hill trek also comprises different cultures and ethnicities, which you might not get to see anywhere in the world.

Besides, the trekking trails made of stones, the houses and lodges made of rocks, and the hospitality offered by the people show how well the history of Nepal and its beauty were carved. Furthermore, you will also see the hard work and determination of the people inhabiting such a high altitude and trying to serve the tourists almost everything they want to eat and everything they wish for, refreshment, or rest.

You will only see fewer people here, unlike in the city or urban areas; life feels peaceful and at a slow pace here. People still follow the old tradition and live a happy beautiful life embracing the mountain culture. Furthermore, these regions are the best if you want to get the actual taste of Nepali festivals, like Dashain, Tihar, Holi, and many more.

Therefore, if you have come to Nepal to study its cultural and ethnic diversions, of course, without missing the beats of adventures, the Poon Hill trek might be one of your best choices.

A Nature-filled Birthday Celebration in Nepal with Eco Holidays

My family and I planned a special celebration for my son's birthday. We discussed where to go and made a list of various countries, but since my son loves nature, we all decided on Nepal as the perfect destination for the celebration. We thought trekking would be the best way to celebrate, so we planned to go to Poon Hill. We contacted Eco Holidays Nepal and Mr. Dhruba Dharel, who gave us great advice and provided a helpful packing list. Once we arrived in Nepal, we started our trek with our guide, reached Poon Hill, and celebrated the birthday. I believe this was the best family celebration we've ever had.
